Before the organization of Clark County, the territory consisted of the civil township of Jefferson, Des Moines and Jackson, all attached to and formed a part of Lewis County.  The county was brought into being by the act of the General Assembly of the State of Missouri, entitled, “An act to organize the County of Clark.  Approved December 16, A. D., 1836.”  This land is declared to be a separate and distinct county, to be called Clark, in honor of Gov. William Clark.

No Star/Starr in Clark County in 1840. No Starr/Star in the above mentioned counties with the exception of:

To address Don's questions about the 1860 census index entries below.  The census taker in 1860 Clark County had lousy handwriting.  So, although I interpreted the birth states differently, I had some trouble feeling comfortable with things like Alamisa's age.

Verla Pinkerton:

Stated that her ggrandmother is Louisa Cantwell wife of Jonathan Cantwell and her gggrandmother is Catherine Louisa Starr.

I would like to hear from anyone that has info on Catherine Louisa Starr, born in NC and died in Clark Co. MO.  She married Jonathan Cantwell, December 1840 in Decatur Co. IN.  Her mother was Catherine (Unknown) and I believe her father was John Starr that was in Union Co. IN on the 1830 & 1840 census.  A John Starr bought land in Decatur Co. IN abt. 1836.

Other Starrs in this township:

Mary C Starr, 24, born NC, residing in home of Jonathan (28) and Louisa Cantwell (26, born NC)

(I think she is the daughter of John Starr Jr, son of John Starr & Rachel Catherine Jobe Starr.  I also thing that her name is actually Mary G Starr.  The Mary G [C] Starr that is buried in the Lewis Family Graveyard.  The information shows hers as: b. May. 3, 1826 d. Jan. 16, 1893.  It appears that she never married or that they listed her using her maiden name only.)
